Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- An apartment fire that started just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday night, displaced 17 and sent two residents to the hospital. About 75 firefighters responded to The Oaks apartment complex on Water Oak Drive. The complex is made up of 16 units, and 14 of them were damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. (abc11, CBS17, FOX8, WRAL)
- Raleigh gas prices have hit a new all time high, at $4.22 per gallon. The state average is $4.20 and has continued to increase. The national average is currently at $4.41. The price of diesel has also set a record high, averaging $5.43 per gallon in Raleigh. (CBS17, WRAL)
- North Carolina State University police issued a campus-wide alert following a gas station robbery at the Speedway on Western Boulevard. The suspect threatened the gas station clerk with a machete and left the scene on foot. The university held its graduation ceremony earlier this month and summer classes do not begin until May 18. (WRAL)
- Friends of Robert Richardson formed a search party on Wednesday looking for clues and raising awareness regarding the missing bouncer. The Raleigh Police Department has a missing person report on file, but have not gotten any solid leads regarding his whereabouts. Richardson has been missing since a fender bender on May 4, in which friends believe he may have been injured in the crash and left his car, phones and laptop behind due to being disoriented. (abcNews, WRAL)
- Governor Roy Cooper has revealed his recommended adjustments to the second year of the two-year budget. Cooper's plan would increase spending by $2.3 billion, and use $2.4 billion on itemized "investments" on things like infrastructure, economic development, and workforce training. His plan would leave $1.5 billion of the anticipated $6.2 billion surplus, and House Speaker Tim Moore says that the proposal includes several shared priorities, however they are wary of increasing spending as potential economic downturns loom.
