Officer DWI + Believed Attempted Kidnapping + Aid for Western NC

Here's a five-minute guide to everything worth knowing in town today.

(Patch Media)

Happy National Cuban Sandwich Day,

Today I've rounded up news about the officer charged with a DWI in Raleigh, a believed attempted kidnapping, and the bill requiring parental consent for emergency use vaccines. Check out that, events and more below.

Today's weather, 8/23: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 90 Low: 77.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. A Wilson police officer was charged with a DWI in Raleigh early on Saturday morning. Marisela Cabello is an officer with the Wilson PD and was arrested by the State Highway Patrol around 1:35 am. Cabello was off duty and was arrested near downtown at the intersection of Peace Street and Capital Boulevard. Officer Cabello has been placed on administrative leave while criminal and internal investigations are conducted. (FOX8)
  2. A woman was taken to a hospital on Saturday afternoon to be treated for stab wounds. The incident happened around 3:45 pm near Creedmoor and Durham roads. Deputies are looking for a suspect and believe that the attack may have been a possible attempted kidnapping. (CBS17)
  3. The law requiring parental consent in order for children to receive emergency use authorization medicines has passed. The measure received almost unanimous support in the Republican-controlled General Assembly. The measure will also allow trained pharmacy technicians and interns to administer COVID-19 or flu vaccines under a pharmacists supervision. (WSOC-TV)
  4. With the North Carolina coast left ravaged by Hurricane Fred, one Raleigh church is doing something to help. Echo Church's members are teaming up with Lt. Governor Mark Robinson's office and collecting donations and supplies for neighbors in the west. Randy Coggins II is calling on church members as well as the greater Raleigh community to pitch in and help. The church intends to deliver donations on Wednesday. (WRAL)
  5. Wake Forest residents gathered in downtown to mourn the death of Aven Moffat, a young boy who fell ill to a brain-eating amoeba after swimming in a NC lake. The illness is incredibly rare and between 1962 and 2019, only 148 cases were reported. The Moffat family has raised nearly $200,000 to bring awareness and hopefully help find a prevention and cure.
