Happy National Happy Hour Day Raleigh!
Thank goodness it's Saturday am I right. My week has been packed with work, yard work, and trying to keep the house clean. Translation, I am very ready for a day to just relax. Now all I need to do is figure out where to go to really enjoy my weekend. If you're trying to decide, I've got several fun events below and all the news you need before you get out. Read all of that and more below, including:
- Redevelopment of Heritage Park
- A zero proof party if you're not so into happy hours
- Sign up to comment at the next city council meeting
But first, today's weather:
Variable cloudiness. High: 75 Low: 46.
Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- Almost a month after his death, Officer Gabriel Torres is being recognized for his outstanding work. The recognition is given to one officer each month, and Torres was honored for the month of October posthumously. The award was presented to Torres' wife and daughter. In a Facebook post, the department said that Torres served the Northwest District "with pride and distinction, demonstrating a level of compassion and maturity far beyond his years." (CBS17) The suspect in the Hedingham mass shooting has officially been moved from WakeMed to a rehab facility that has not been disclosed. (abc11)
- NC State University is mourning the loss of another student to what is an apparent suicide. This is the fourth student to reportedly die of suicide this semester and the fifth student death overall. The student was a male sophomore and was found dead in a residence hall room. This death comes just over a week after the university held its first Wellness Day. (WRAL)
- Wake County parents are raising concerns as CO2 levels in schools are well above the target benchmark for good ventilation. Parents have asked for more answers as to what is being done about indoor air quality. With little response, some parents have been taking matters into their own hands. Some parents have sent their children to school with CO2 monitors. Collected data shows that air quality was around target levels around 9:00 a.m. at 800 ppm, but throughout the day they fluctuated, reaching as high as 3200 ppm. Parents and other advocates are urging the district to conduct its own audit and release a plan for how it will address the issue. (abc11) Parents also shared concerns regarding student reassignment on Thursday night during a public hearing of the second draft. (CBS17)
- Brinshore Development and Raleigh Raised Development, co-owned by North Carolina Central head coach LeVelle Moton, have announced an affordable housing project partnership. The partnership will also work with the Raleigh Housing Authority to redevelop Heritage Park. The redevelopment will work to preserve the current affordable units and expand opportunities to more families. Heritage Park has been a pillar of the community since the 1970s, and the partnership hopes to help preserve and update the Raleigh community to "ensure that the vision and voices of existing and future residents are incorporated into the design of the community. (HBCU Gameday)
- A new study of homebuyers by the National Association of Realtors has found that the number of first-time homebuyers has hit a record low. Even as prices in Wake County fall, first-time homebuyers are continuing to feel priced out of the market. In October, the median sales price of a Wake County home was down $5,000 from the month prior, still at $460,000. According to the National Association of Realtors, the median household income needed to buy a home in the U.S. has risen to $88,300, nearly $40,000 more than it was in 2019. (WRAL TechWire)
