Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Ex-Raleigh detective Omar Abdullah has been indicted on felony obstruction of justice charges. Abdullah is accused of framing dozens of young Black men in a fake heroin scheme. The indictment came following a long investigation, following his termination from the department on October 28, 2021. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Abdullah spent more than seven years in prison, and more than two years in jail before the charges were dismissed. (abc11, WNCT9, WRAL)
  2. Wake County has selected five nonprofit organizations to receive the new Community Innovation Grant. CASA NC, Families Together, Oak City Cares, Southeastern Wake Adult Day Center and StandUp-SpeakOut North Carolina were all selected to receive $100,000 a year for the next two years. The funds come from some of the $3.8 million grant given to Wake County Health & Human Services by the CDC in 2021. The Community Innovation Grant was established to help organizations dedicated to serving people facing adversities that impact their health and well-being. (Spectrum News 1)
  3. According to new data, 66% of millennials who spent their teen years in Raleigh have stayed in the area. According to Census data, millennials have been less likely to move away from home in their young adult years. While Raleigh millennials have not been moving away from the city as much, the data shows that 49% of millennials in Raleigh now are from areas outside of the city. (WRAL)
  4. Mile markers will soon be changing on what will eventually become the new Interstate 587. A 37-mile stretch of U.S. 264 between Wilson and Greenville was redesigned as I-587 and is in the process of having the numbers changed to new numbers through Wilson, Nash, and Wake counties. The numbers began going up on Thursday and should be completed by early next week if the weather permits. (CBS17)
  5. Five temporary cooling stations will remain open through next week. All of the locations open at noon on Monday-Friday. Officials said in a release that they will remain open with "the possibility of continuing if heat remains a safety concern." All Wake County Public Libraries are also offering relief from the heat, and are open over the weekend. (CBS17)
