Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- North Carolina is set to receive $750 million from opioid settlements against pharmaceutical companies Cardinal, McKesson, AmerisourceBergen, and Johnson & Johnson. Attorney General Josh Stein's office said that 85% of the funds will go directly to N.C.'s local communities to support treatment, recovery, harm reduction, and other strategies to address the opioid epidemic. Of the $750 million, Wake County will receive more than $31 million, and the City of Raleigh will get $3,650,936. (CBS17)
- North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper ordered state offices under his control to terminate government contracts that benefit Russian businesses. The announcement came on Monday and calls all agencies and departments to review existing contracts and terminate any that directly benefit businesses that are headquartered in Russia or have their principal place of business there. The ABC Commission confirmed they will be suspending sales of all Russian made liquor as quickly as practicable. (Spectrum News 1)
- After a full-day meeting, Torchlight Academy is one step closer to a forced shutdown. The State Board of Education's Charter Schools Advisory Board voted to recommend the charter be revoked due to findings that showed the Academy was violating state special education laws and not providing requested financial information. (abc11, CBS17)
- The Raleigh City Council is once again reviewing speed limit reductions for several roads in the city. One of the roads under review is Sawmill Road that connects to Six Forks Road and sees about 4,000 people daily. The other roads include Carnage Drive in front of Carnage Middle School and Kelway Drive off of Ebenezer Church Road. (WRAL) NCDOT will also be investing more than $16 million into paving about 60 miles of state roads in Wake County. (CBS17)
