Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Wake County commissioners are now discussing changes to the county's outdoor shooting ordinance after stray bullets in Knightdale were hitting too close to homes. On Friday, county officials said that they will provide three opportunities over the next three weeks for residents to hear the current rules and proposed changes, and they hope residents will weigh in on the suggestions. Changes in the ordinance would only affect unincorporated areas as the discharge within all Wake County city or town limits is banned. (CBS17)
  2. The North Carolina Supreme Court has overturned a 90-year-old precedent, and now nurses can face legal charges for medical injuries. The precedent was made official in Byrd v. Marion General Hospital which protected nurses working under a doctor's supervision. On Friday the State Supreme Court determined that nurses can be held legally liable for their actions. Ashley Hughes, a critical care nurse and legal nurse consultant says this ruling will exacerbate the existing nursing shortage. (FOX46)
  3. The family of fallen Sheriff's Deputy Ned Byrd held a press conference addressing Byrd's death and decisions made afterward by Sheriff Gerald Baker. The family accused Sheriff Baker of lying to the family, refusing help to allow Wake County deputies to attend Byrd's funeral, denying other deputies that were present time off to grieve and making "abrupt and inappropriately timed reassignments." The family said that the recent actions were a dishonor to Byrd's memory. (WRAL) Sheriff Gerald Baker issued a statement on Friday saying he was not going to address information about the moves, and called reports about staff changes in the unit a "disrespect" to Byrd's memory. (CBS17)
  4. Raleigh police responded to a late night shooting on Friday night. The shooting was reported around 10 p.m. on Skinner Drive, and at least a dozen police vehicles were present in the neighborhood while police investigated. First responders took her to the hospital, but officials have not released her identity or the extent of her injuries. There have not been any arrests yet or details regarding a suspect. (CBS17, WRAL)
  5. The Raleigh Police Department has charged a woman in the deadly crash that killed a motorcyclist on Thursday afternoon. Anthony Gomez-Cid was killed in the accident while travelling south in the left lane on Falls of Neuse Road. Nakethia Courser Dickens attempted to make a left turn onto northbound Falls of Neuse when she pulled out and hit Gomez-Cid. Dickens has been charged with failure to yield and misdemeanor death by vehicle. (CBS17)

From my notebook:

  • It's Eat An Extra Dessert Day and I recommend you go somewhere where you simply cannot choose just one dessert! There are a few places in Raleigh that always hook me with more than one, but since it's a Sunday, I'm leaning towards Bittersweet Raleigh.
  • Wake County teacher Kim Watson is receiving national recognition after her student Harrison Gattis nominated her for the Honored National Teacher Award. (abc11)
  • Applications are open for the State Fair Farm Family of the Day Program. (The Warren Record)
  • Clayton Riverwalk and Poole Road sites failed the final fecal bacteria Swim Guide test of the summer. (CBS17)

Now you're in the loop and ready to start this Sunday! I'll see you around.
