Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Several parents sounded the alarm after a strange man was seen at Kiwanis Park in Raleigh. Pictures circulating showed the man standing near a van with locks welded on the doors and strange writing on the back in a tactical vest. Parents called the police on the man, and they spoke to him but he was not charged with a crime. A day after the incident at the park, other kids reported seeing the man at a Raleigh Trail. (WRAL)
  2. One of the two brothers charged in the death of Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd has filed a petition in court pleading his innocence. The motion asks the court to give Arturo Marin-Sotelo a hearing to determine the terms of his provisional release based on his presumed innocence. The motion also asks the state to provide evidence collected against him, saying that the GPS data from the cell phone shows that he was not near officer Byrd when he was killed. The brothers claim they were hunting deer in rural Wake County on the night of the shooting. (The Bharat Express News)
  3. Raleigh police responded to a stabbing early Saturday morning near a club on Glenwood Avenue. The incident took place around 2:16 am. Investigators say that two men engaged in a fight that led to the stabbing. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment, but his condition remains unknown right now. The assailant was not in police custody as of Saturday morning, and officers are working to identify him. (CBS17, WRAL)
  4. Neighborfood Express has been working to combat food insecurity in Raleigh. According to Wake County, 12% of residents are food insecure and The Marcus Harris Foundation began the program in November 2020 to help those facing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, thanks to a $20,000 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, the organization has been able to expand to 10 more neighborhoods. Neighborfood Express is now delivering food, diapers and books to more than 1,000 families across 20 neighborhoods per month. (CBS17)
  5. Congresswoman Deborah Ross held a roundtable discussion in Raleigh on Friday morning on immigration reform efforts to help Documented Dreamers. Ross is advocating for expanded protections for Documented Dreamers, as they age out of protection when they turn 21. Dreamers gathered with Ross to share stories about how their visa status impacts them, and are working to get Republican senate votes to help approve amendments on two bills that would offer protections to Documented Dreamers.
