Happy Museum Selfie Day Raleigh!

So, I did what I said I was going to do and wandered around Raleigh yesterday. I finally went to and tried a few places I had been meaning to go, and it was really nice. I'm the type who really wants to know all of the best local spots for good food, and getting to try somewhere that I have heard so many good things about is always so rewarding! You know what else is rewarding, being in the know about what is happening. Catch up on everything, including:

  • Businesses fight costs of inflation and rely on community support.
  • Here's a wine education opportunity.
  • The 2023 North Carolina Transportation Summit is taking place.

But first, today's weather:

Times of clouds and sun. High: 67 Low: 52.

Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. On Tuesday, one person died while in the custody of Raleigh police. According to officials the situation happened outside of a sweepstakes parlor at Rock Quarry Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. According to Raleigh Chief of Police Estella Patterson, six officers were placed on administrative duty. Little information has been shared on what caused the death, but Patterson said that the man became unresponsive after being shot with a stun gun and was taken to the hospital where he later died. (abc11, Spectrum News 1, WNCT9, WRAL)
  2. The City of Raleigh says that they plan to flush water lines on Tuesday after reports of discolored tap water in west Raleigh. Residents near Avent Ferry Road and Western Boulevard reached out to WRAL news on Monday with concerns about the brown coloration of their tap water. A spokesperson with Raleigh Water said that the water is an aesthetic issue more than a safety issue, and says it is still safe to drink. He also said that it is unlikely that the discolored water is related to the large water main break on Western Boulevard. (WRAL)
  3. Craig Curtis can give a tour of his southeast neighborhood that includes a growing list of places that have torn apart people's lives by gun violence. The most recent addition is his son Craig Jr. Last week Raleigh Police chief Estella Patterson addressed the growing number of crimes involving youth and said 11% of aggravated assaults in the last quarter of 2022 were committed by juveniles who had access to guns. The Raleigh Police Department is partnering with the Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency on a statewide safe storage project that includes a campaign about gun locks. Craig Sr. is sharing his pain, "I laugh, I cry, I mope so my emotions are everywhere. This has to stop, it has to stop, people are suffering, communities are suffering behind gun violence." (abc11)
  4. As inflation continues, many businesses are struggling to keep the doors open. Shanae Bryant, owner of Madame B's Bakery is fearful that the cost of inflation could force her business to close by the end of the month. Bryant has been baking and cooking since she was 9 years old, and has been eating the cost of ingredients as she refuses to compromise quality. Other businesses in the Triangle have been relying on community support to stay afloat, with one Durham staple collecting more than $30,000 to stay afloat via GoFundMe. (abc11) On the other side of the coin, Evette Hunt is working out of downtown and is highlighting the value of representation of Black entrepreneurs. Hunt owns Evette's Beauty Salon on S. Wilmington Street. Hunt took over the space shortly before the pandemic but has managed to keep going after a difficult first year that included a shutdown and damages from downtown protests. (abc11)
  5. A firefighter was injured on Monday night while battling a large Wake County home fire. Crews responded to the fire on Pagan Road in southern Wake County on Monday before 6:45 p.m., and smoke was visible from at least a mile away. One firefighter was injured from the partial ceiling collapse and he was taken to WakeMed for evaluation. All residents made it out of the fire safely. Crews stayed at the scene throughout the night to ensure the fire did not spark up again. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
