Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. A petition was filed on Monday to remove current Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker from office. A rarely used state law permits the removal of a local elected official if it is proven that the official willfully neglected to perform their duties or is guilty of "maladministration of office or negligence." The petition was filed by Jeffrey Dobson, a Republican candidate for Wake County District Attorney, and five Wake County residents who joined on the petition. Current Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said that by her reading of the statute, she or a county attorney must approve the petition prior to filing, which she did not, thus making the filing illegitimate. Dobson maintains that by his interpretation, the filing is legitimate, and so a North Carolina Superior Court Judge will have to decided if the complaint should be escalated. (WRAL)
  2. The Raleigh Police Department has recovered three of the seven cars that were reported stolen from Brother Auto Sales on Sunday morning. One of the business owners, Ehab Bashay said that they have had to stop business completely, as the keys to vehicles on the lot have been stolen, subjecting buyers to possible theft. The business owners said that this is not the first time their business has been targeted, and insurance will not cover the costs due to former payouts. Footage of the incident shows as many as 20 thieves in an incident that lasted hours. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  3. The city of Raleigh is looking to hire 15 individuals to help bridge the gap between City Hall and communities. The 'Community Connecters' will be part of a pilot program to get information out to their communities, and act as experts to what works in their neighborhoods. The connectors will be paid $20 an hour for a five hour work week, and jobs will include things like attending the first neighborhood meeting of a rezoning project. During a Q&A on Monday night, some questioned why the city would be beginning this program after doing away with Citizen Advisory Councils. (CBS17)
  4. A man accused of threatening to shoot up a Wake County school via snapchat appeared before a judge on Monday morning. Residents tipped off Zebulon police about the alleged threat posted on Friday, September 9 on Snapchat. Connor Terrell was arrested in Mebane and charged with communicating threats of mass violence. In court, Terrell asked for a reduced bond saying that he does not have a car, access to guns and lives more than an hour from where the threat believed to be directed. (WRAL)
  5. A pig was spotted roaming through a Raleigh neighborhood on Saturday without supervision. Neighbors have seen animals roaming the area before, but never a pig. On Monday, Animal Control officers discovered the pig hiding under decks to find refuge from the sun. After luring the pig out with snacks, officials were able to capture the pig. Thus far, no one has come forward to claim the pig, who is being cared for at the Blind Spot Sanctuary. (abc11)

From my notebook:

  • It's National Sober Day and it has been a while since I featured Zero Proof Raleigh on here. Sobriety is such an incredible feat to those who have struggled with alcohol, and Zero Proof provides opportunities to enjoy socialization without alcohol.
  • Sign-ups are officially open for the State Fair competitions, those looking to compete can sign up here.
  • If you're looking for a new brunch option, Eggs Up Grill just opened a new location in Garner as the third location for local franchise partners Scott and Rob Johnson.
  • Raleigh Little Theatre will be presenting "Pride and Prejudice" by Kate Hamill, an adaptation of Jane Austen's popular novel, beginning on September 16. (BroadwayWorld)
  • If you're a big Adam Sandler fan, he will be bringing his upcoming comedy tour to PNC Arena on November 13. (WRAL)

That's it for today. I'll see you back in your inbox tomorrow morning with your next update!
