Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- One family is turning its holiday tradition into a business to provide inclusivity to children in the area. Larry Stroud began dressing up as Santa Claus for his granddaughters in order for them to see a Black Santa Claus. Now the family has opened a studio that will do professional photoshoots the first two weekends in December. (CBS17)
- Homeowners in Wake County can expect their homeowners insurance to increase next year, beginning June 1, 2022. In Wake County, rates will rise by nearly 10% due to more wind and hail losses from damaging storms. (WRAL)
- Wake Tech has gotten a first-of-its-kind machine that will allow the results of DNA processing in under two hours. A normal DNA run at can take 24-36 hours with it often taking months for results to be returned due to a backlog at the state lab. Janie Slaughter, the head of the Criminal Justice Department at Wake Tech is using the technology to assist several different local agencies with their cases. (WRAL)
- An 18-wheeler crash left multiple lanes of Interstate-540 closed on Wednesday. The wreck occurred around 3:45 am and the lanes remained closed until 7:26 am. The tractor-trailer crashed after driving off the road, and it is unclear if any charges will be pressed. (CBS17)
- On Tuesday, Governor Cooper signed legislation that will change the way high school athletics are governed. The new law allows the State Board of Education to create a formal agreement with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association that will last an initial four years. (abc11)
