Police Crackdowns + Free Coffee + Wake Schools Cyber Attack

Your five-minute guide to everything worth knowing today in town.

(Patch Media)

Happy National Coffee Day,

If you're sitting down to read this and haven't had your coffee yet, might I suggest jumping ahead to the notebook so you can find out where to get the delectable bean juice free of charge. I always say, coffee is just water that knew it could be more. Once you're all beaned up and ready to go, you can enjoy news of crackdowns, a cybersecurity breech, and an arrest made in the heart wrenching case of Bubba Allen. All that and more below.

Today's weather, 9/29: Clear throughout the day. High: 82 Low: 62.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Raleigh Police Department announced on Twitter that it and North Carolina Highway Patrol have teamed up to crack down on speeding on interstates and major thoroughfares. As part of the speed enforcement project, troopers were out on Interstate-540 in Wake County and issued more than 40 speeding tickets in less than 2 hours. (CBS17)
  2. On Tuesday, several Wake County schools were affected by a cyber attack. The cyber attack was on the district's phone service provider and impacted outgoing and incoming calls. Wake County Public School System posted a message to inform people of the issue, and it has since been resolved. (WRAL)
  3. Lead Mine Road was closed early on Tuesday morning due to fallen power lines. The incident left hundreds in the area without power overnight until around 7:00 am. The tree left power lines stretched across Lead Mine Road near Mine Shaft Road and Creedmoor Road and the road closure allowed crews to repair and clean up the mess. (CBS17)
  4. There is new movement in the case involving the death of toddler Brayden "Bubba" Allen on May 4. Bubba died while in the custody of a foster family just after a judge ruled to return him to his mothers care. On Monday, foster father Carl Thomas was officially indicted on a charge of first-degree murder. When Christina Clancy, Bubba's mother learned of the charges she said "Thank you, Jesus." (WRAL)
  5. On Monday, Governor Roy Cooper vetoed a measure that would have limited powers of the attorney general. The measure was approved on party lines after it's creation in response to the handling of a 2020 elections lawsuit. The measure would have required formal approval of settlements challenging state law or the constitution by the Senate leader and House speaker. This marks the 11th veto by Governor Cooper this year, and the 64th veto since early 2017. (WNCT9)
