Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- The Raleigh Police Department is up to 15% vacancy, as they are facing high retirement and resignations. They say there are 123 vacancies for sworn officers, and 15 vacancies for non-sworn positions. City councilmember David Cox requested data from the city regarding the rate of officer loss, and says there have been 163 resignations and 73 retirements since January 2020. Retirements have been declining, but resignations are trending up. One police academy class graduated in May with another scheduled for October, and the pay scale for Raleigh police officers just went into effect as part of the new city budget. (CBS17)
- New inflation data shows that the rate is going down, but economists say there is still a long way to go as grocery costs continue rising. Raleigh families are being forced to make difficult choices between groceries and other necessities. The price of gas has been steadily decreasing, although they are still higher in Durham. Although many people believe that we are in a recession, the labor market remains strong. (abc11)
- Eleven people have been displaced following a Wednesday afternoon fire at a home on Chamberlain Street. Multiple units responded to the blaze that was isolated in the attic area, and extinguished quickly. Multiple families and pets were inside the home when the blaze begin around 3:30 p.m. A fire incident report released at 9 p.m. said that 50% of the home was damaged, one firefighter suffered minor burns, and no other injuries were reported. - The mother of a missing Cary 5-year-old has been charged with child abduction after an AMBER Alert was issued on Wednesday. The mother, Crystal Beatrice Walston reportedly stole a Ford Escape belonging to UNC REX after attacking two employees. At 6 a.m. on Thursday, State Highway Patrol received a call from a driver following the Lexus the two were believed to have moved into, and were able to safely stop the vehicle after a chase, and find the girl. (abc11) In an unrelated missing persons case, a silver alert has been issued for 83-year-old Joan Ethel Ramsey, who is missing from her apartment on Leland Drive in northeast Raleigh. (WRAL)
- On Wednesday night, a Zack's Gas 76 and the connecting grocery store were taped off after a shooting near New Bern Avenue. Police say that people were shooting at each other near the intersection, but it is unclear how it was connected to the gas station or grocery store. (CBS17) Raleigh police are investigating a shooting that took place in the northeastern part of the city. The condition of the man who was rushed to the hospital is unknown and police have not released information about the suspect. (abc11, WRAL)
