Happy First Sunday of Advent Raleigh!

Hopefully you got most of your shopping out of the way on Black Friday/Small Business Saturday. Now we can move forward with the holiday season. I'm sitting here typing out this newsletter with the Grinch playing in the background, and it's right at the part where the whos realize all of their presents are gone. I feel like after the shopping days start to settle, people really get the opportunity to focus on the holidays for what they are, an incredible opportunity to spend time with those we cherish and be grateful for everything we do have in life. Now obviously there is still "Cyber Monday" if you aren't quite done shopping yet, but that's my morning rambling and I hope you start your day with a little bit of positivity to share with our city. Before you get your day started, read all about:

  • Inflation affects Christmas tree prices
  • Elf movie night
  • NCSU celebrates their win over UNC

But first, today's weather:

Breezy with showers. High: 72 Low: 48.

Here are the top four stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Raleigh police are investigating after a girl was struck and killed in a Friday night hit-and-run. The incident happened just after 7:30 p.m. near Hillsborough Street and Bashford Road. The girl was described by police only as "a female juvenile pedestrian," and attempted to cross the road not in a designated crosswalk. Police are looking for a white 2006-2008 Hyundai hybrid car. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  2. Earlier this year, the Raleigh Boychoir announced it would expand to include female singers. Now, the choir has officially renamed itself as the Raleigh Youth Choir. The holiday season will be the first opportunity for the group to sing together. Choir members are happy to hear the harmonies they are able to create with the added range of voices. The organization also plans to expand its program to allow kids of different ages to participate and perform together. (WNCT9)
  3. In spite of inflation, Christmas trees continue to be in high demand this holiday season. The owner of Black Achers Christmas Tree Farm in Raleigh says that families are still coming out for the experience of shopping for Christmas trees, while they have little cookies and hot apple cider available for kids waiting for Santa Claus. The tree farm has been selling trees since 1983, and although this year they have to put price tags on the trees, they are still seeing demand. (CBS17)
  4. North Raleigh residents have complaints as a landfill's controlled burn is causing smoke to drift through the area. The company on Gresham Lake Road disposes of trees and limbs. Smoke from the burn was rising beside Interstate 540 on Friday. Residents complained of ashes on their cars and smoke making it difficult to breathe in their homes. (CBS17)

Monday in Raleigh:

From my notebook:

  • It's the First Sunday in Advent, and there is so much debate around when to put up your Christmas tree, if you choose to put one up, but today is the day! Now I'm a firm believer that it's never too early to put up your tree, but here's a fun little history on Christmas trees and when people put them up.
  • Teammates took a North Carolina State flag and planted it on the UNC midfield logo after their win that ended the regular season. (abc11)
  • RDU saw a lot of reunions over the Thanksgiving holiday, but one was particularly significant as sisters got the opportunity to meet after more than 50 years passed. (WRAL)
