Happy National Mushroom Day,

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny, warm and humid. High: 82 Low: 63.

Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The Raleigh City Council has decided to forgo drafting its own non-discrimination ordinance, and instead will simply opt into the Wake County ordinance. Council Member Patrick Buffkin noted that having one law would be helpful to businesses with retail stores in multiple jurisdictions without having to manage different rule sets. Some criticize the city and say that it is not a leader for change, but merely a follower. (INDY Week)
  2. The new Chief of Police in Raleigh, Stella Patterson is vowing for more transparency as violent crime increases. In her first quarterly news conference on Wednesday, she shared new data and analysis on crime in the city. With noticeable increases in homicide rates, Chief Patterson hopes that the community will be able to work with police to reduce crime. (abc11) Chief Patterson also expressed that the department is still trying to fill 100 vacancies in the department. (abc11)
  3. A group of 118 first responders and city employees have hired an attorney to fight the city's COVID-19 employment mandate. Attorney James Lawrence will be representing the group of unvaccinated city employees against a mandate that they believe "fundamentally violates the city's own stated goals of equity and inclusion." (CBS17)
  4. North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers are searching for a man involved in a crash on I-87 in Wake County on Wednesday. The man took his license plate off of the motorcycle he was riding and he left the scene after crashing into the back of a white Nissan sedan. No one was injured in the crash. (WRAL)
  5. North Carolina is feeling the sting of the national gas price increase. GasBuddy has reported prices at their highest levels in seven years. GasBuddy says the increase is happening because oil-producing companies refuse to increase production to more than initially planned over the summer. (CBS17)
