Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Only one day after the school shooting that left one dead in a Winston-Salem high school, two Enloe High students have been charged for bringing two firearms to school. The Raleigh Police obtained juvenile petitions to charge the two individuals found to have handled the weapons with carry conceal, possession of firearms on school grounds, and possession of a firearm by a minor. Thankfully the discovery came without incident as administrators were alerted of the possession and questioned the student in the main office. (WRAL, US News) Earlier in the day, a photo of a gun was shared with students at South Garner High School along with threatening language, but it was believed to be a hoax. (abc11)
  2. In January of 2020, Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin asked a group of city staff to look at changing the structure and compensation of city council. The city-appointed study group has finalized its recommendations and will present findings to the council next week. The group recommended moving from two to four-year terms, raising the compensation of council members and the mayor, and adding a city council seat which would also mean creation of a new district. (CBS17)
  3. Raleigh bus drivers are being subjected to dangerous levels of heat while transporting students. With the shortage of drivers they have been forced to work longer hours in the extreme heat. Some drivers have endured temperatures in the 100 degree range, and others have been hospitalized with heat-related illness. Many of the buses are equipped with air conditioning units that no longer work, and the county has not communicated why they are not being fixed. (WRAL)
  4. North Carolina State University has been selected by the National Science Foundation to be one of nine I-Corps Hubs in the nation. The Hub's goal is to create and sustain a diverse, inclusive innovation ecosystem by establishing tools, training activities, funding research, providing opportunities, and sharing innovation practices. NCSU has been home to an I-Corps Site since 2017 and will now serve as a partner institution, helping lead the I-Corps Mid-Atlantic Hub. (WRAL Tech Wire)
  5. Policy News:
    1. The State's Court of Appeals has determined that prohibition against felon voting rights will continue until the lawsuit against it runs its course. (WRAL)
    2. The bipartisan legislation for police reform has received near unanimous approval by the General Assembly, and was signed into law by Governor Cooper on Thursday. (abc11)
