Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:
- On Wednesday, Wake County launched a new initiative to help preserve affordable housing in the area. City leaders announced the launch of the Wake County Affordable Housing Preservation Fund comes in the form of a $47 million bank loan, involving many partners. The Wake County Board of Commissioners approved the fund in 2021, and the city of Raleigh has committed $4 million to help preserve affordable housing in city limits. The fund partners with with nonprofits and big banks to help preserve existing affordable housing. (INDY Week, WRAL)
- WakeMed cut the ribbon on a new medical office on New Bern Avenue Wednesday. The Center for Community Health hopes to provide care for underserved communities and reach people who have social barriers to health, like homelessness, lack of insurance, transportation and financial instability. The space expects to care for 400-500 people annually with services ranging from primary care to mental health issues, trauma care, homeless engagement assistance and more. (CBS17, WRAL) This comes as the North Carolina Treasurer's report calls out state hospitals for profiting millions from Medicare while claiming to lose money. (WRAL)
- Raleigh's Crumbl Cookies on Sherman Oak Place was forced to close down on Tuesday morning after a pickup truck crashed into the store. The Raleigh Fire Department closed the store down due to unsafe work conditions. Instead of letting the baked goods go to waste, employees gave the cookies to Raleigh fire crews. According to a tweet from the City of Raleigh, firefighters brought the cookies to the Emergency Communications Center as "a gesture of thanks and appreciation for those who worked during the tragic mass shooting event on October 13." (CBS17, WNCT9)
- A Raleigh teenager is doing his part to help those in need, after his own battle with cancer inspired him. Edward Thompson planned his first haunted house from his hospital bed, and after getting through his own treatments, he has worked to put up a haunted house with a mission of giving back. He asks those who visit the house at 9401 S. Mere Court to donate to Give Kids The World. This year he will also be hosting a blood drive. Edward says that most kids who go through cancer treatments need to receive a lot of blood donations, and since he is unable to give due to treatments, hosting a blood drive is the next best thing. (CBS17)
- North Carolina State University is investigating the third confirmed student death of the semester. The Raleigh Police Department was present at University Towers, investigating the death that occurred. Chancellor Randy Woodson released a statement of grief, and said that RPD does not suspect foul play. The University is offering expanded counseling services and hosting a State of Wellness discussion following the student deaths on and near campus. (NCSU, The Technician)
- Raleigh police have arrested one man after a pedestrian was killed in a crash. On Tuesday around 5 p.m., Wilson Trenholm Holliday was driving a truck on Fox Road in the far right lane when it ran off the road, striking Jose Mejia who was walking along the road. Holliday overcorrected the truck and crashed into a tree, sending his passenger to the hospital with injuries. Mejia was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. Holliday was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, aggravated felony death by vehicle, and more. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
In partnership with T-Mobile:
Nominate a local hero. Heroes aren't just the people behind grand gestures and life-saving measures. They're also folks from all walks of life who make things better in Raleigh with small gestures, acts of selflessness, or just by showing up. We're working with our friends at T-Mobile to give thanks — and a bit of recognition — to some of these folks. So if you know a teacher, health care provider, veteran or someone else who's making a difference in Raleigh, give them a shoutout! Just fill out this form, and we'll do the rest, by following up and doing stories about them on Patch, so the whole neighborhood can celebrate how awesome they are.
