Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Voting for the North Carolina primaries is over and if you want to see the complete breakdown of candidates advancing, the North Carolina State Board of Elections has all of the primary results here. Some notable highlights:
    1. Madison Cawthorn conceded the primary, and State Senator Chuck Edwards released a statement declaring victory in District 11. (abc11, CBS17)
    2. Former President Donald Trump's endorsement, Ted Budd advanced in the GOP primary to face Democratic elect Cheri Beasley for the North Carolina Senate race. (abc11, WSOC-TV)
    3. The Wake County Sheriff's Office Democratic primary is headed to a runoff as neither candidate met the required 30% +1 margin needed to secure victory. Rowe was just shy of the threshold at 29.45% of the vote, followed by Sheriff Gerald Baker at 24.11%. (abc11)
  2. The City of Raleigh has proposed a new budget to increase pay for the city's police and firefighters. Funding for the increase in pay would likely come from a property tax, water, sewer, and stormwater bill increase. Raleigh's city manager Marchel Adams-David presented the budget at the Tuesday afternoon city council meeting. The 2-cent property tax rate increase would be around $63 more annually for the average valued home. (CBS17, WRAL)
  3. The Wake County Board of Education approved two measures during its Tuesday session. The board approved the price increase for school meals by $0.25 beginning in the 2022-2023 school year. (abc11) The School district also approved six early release days next year to allow teachers time to complete new state-required training during the school year. (WRAL)
  4. The City of Raleigh is revisiting plans to bring a new hotel and apartment tower to downtown. Prior to the pandemic, city staff were working with consulting firm JLL to develop plans to bring the new developments downtown, but the process was cancelled when the pandemic hit. Now, with the city-owned land valued at $32.4 million, the city is again discussing the development near the Convention Center to increase events held there. (CBS17)
  5. One person was shot at an apartment complex in Raleigh on Tuesday night. Officers responded to the Bridges at North Hills before 10:30 p.m. Witnesses said they heard several shots fired from cars in the parking lot, targeting someone on an apartment balcony. One individual was taken to the hospital. There was no information on their condition. (WRAL)
