Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. North Carolina Republican legislators announced plans on Monday to vote on a bill that would push the May 17 primary to June 7. With the state Supreme Court leaving little time to redraw maps in the event of a strike down, GOP leaders are moving to push back thereby extending the window of time to redraw maps. If the bill passes, the timeframe could eliminate primary runoff elections this year. (WCNC)
  2. Advocates for Daniel Turcios and family are speaking out regarding his death. Kerwin Pittman of Emancipate N.C. says that Turcios was knocked unconscious in the crash, was disoriented, and couldn't understand officers' commands due to limited understanding of English. According to Pittman, video footage, eyewitness accounts, and the medical report provided to the family show that Turcios was shot multiple times even after he was on the ground and no longer a threat. (WNCT9)
  3. Triangle Restaurant Week is set to return for the winter season. Although labor shortages and increased meat prices have led to less participation or price increases, the event will run from January 24-30 and include lunch and dinner options. (abc11)
  4. With hit-and-run crashes bringing attention to speed across the city, Raleigh's city council is taking feedback on lowering the speed at six locations. The six locations includes Crest Road between Varsity Drive and Avent Ferry Roa, near where NC State Student Benjamin De Rose was killed by a hit-and-run in October. The council also voted on reducing speed limits on nine more streets Tuesday. The city has already lowered the limits on eight streets this year. (CBS17)
  5. The city had to close St. Mary's Street between Farview Road and Glenwood Avenue on Monday in order to complete a sewer repair. The road was closed late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Business and residential traffic still had access but all through traffic had to detour on Cowper Drive. (CBS17)
