Happy Make A Difference Day Raleigh,

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and nice. High: 72 Low: 47.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Thursday night, dozens of Wake County residents gathered at Southeast Raleigh Table to share concerns over rising property taxes. Longtime low-income homeowners are pushing a proposed program that would provide aid to those who have lived in their homes for more than 10 years, earn 80% of the average median income or less, and are paying more than 2% of their income on property tax. (abc11, CBS17)
  2. Environmental activists met at Lake Raleigh on Friday to try to persuade lawmakers to ban PFAS in food packaging. Among those in attendance was head of the EPA, Michael Regan who spoke on his long-term plan to regulate PFAS. Seven states have already banned PFAS from food packaging, and North Carolinians are urging lawmakers to step up and support the plan. (CBS17)
  3. A single-vehicle wreck at the Falls of Neuse Road and Thorpshire Drive intersection left traffic lights and cables down across the roadway for hours. All but one lane in each direction were closed for several hours while crews tried to clear the scene. (WRAL)
  4. North Carolina State University professor and forensic anthropologist Ann Ross is teaming up with forensic genealogist Leslie Kaufman to revisit the remains from 120 sets of human remains involved in North Carolina cold cases. The duo relies on crowdsource funding to pay for the testing, and are working with DNA profiles to try to begin building a family tree to identify the remains. (CBS17)
  5. It's been four weeks since hundreds of students poured onto the field to celebrate the Wolfpack's double-overtime victory over Clemson. Since that time, there has been no super-spreader spike in COVID-19 numbers. Dr. Julie Swann, an expert in vaccine distribution says that "outside is about 20 times safer than inside." (WNCT9)
