Happy National Pie Day Raleigh!

We're on to a new week! Do you have any plans for this week? How have your resolutions been going? We're already on our fourth week of the new year, and I'm finally starting to almost consistently write '23' instead of '22' when I have to date things. Here's to hoping this week treats you well, and you can start out all caught up on everything, including:

  • Funds totaling $3.2 million were awarded to colleges and universities across the state.
  • The start of a 6-week square dance lesson is here.
  • A Raleigh veteran combats loneliness via a Facebook group.

But first, today's weather:

Breezy in the afternoon. High: 50 Low: 28.

Here are the top four stories today in Raleigh:

  1. On Saturday protesters gathered in Raleigh demonstrating against the government of Iran. Organizers said that they want the United States government to reject any dealings with the current Iranian regime after the past four and a half months of turmoil. Following the death of a woman in the custody of the country's "morality police," there have been hundreds of people killed during crackdowns. (WRAL)
  2. Republican leaders in the North Carolina General Assembly are calling on the state's Supreme Court to revisit rulings on redistricting and voter ID cases. Prior to the beginning of this year, the North Carolina Supreme Court had a majority of Democrats who threw out the state's voter ID law and determined that political maps were redrawn with unconstitutional gerrymandering. North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore issued a statement on Friday saying that, "the people of North Carolina sent a message Election Day. They clearly rejected the judicial activism of the outgoing majority." (FOX 8, Spectrum News 1)
  3. North Carolina officials in charge of the health plan for state employees said on Friday that they rejected contract protests from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. BCBS lost a multibillion-dollar contract that was awarded to Aetna. BCBS has managed the plan for decades, but the state rebid the contract and Aetna will take over day-to-day claims management in 2025. A spokeswoman for Blue Cross wouldn't confirm the company's next steps but the company issued a statement saying that they would, "continue to pursue efforts to ensure the best outcome." (WRAL)
  4. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced that it will award more than $3.2 million to colleges and universities across the state for Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRPs). The programs were developed in response to the growth in drug and alcohol use while on campus. Nine colleges and universities in North Carolina will receive grant funds to implement recovery programs that will provide access to drug and alcohol-free places for students to receive recovery supports.
