Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. On Monday, protestors gathered in downtown Raleigh to protest the proposed "Parents' Bill of Rights" legislation. Protestors liken the bill to Florida's "Don't Say Gay bill," and although legislators did not meet on Monday, demonstrators were present to express their views. Supporters say the bill is necessary as a safeguard for students, but others believe that it infringes on students' privacy and lends to teacher burn out. (WRAL)
  2. The Raleigh City Council passed the 2023 fiscal year $1.4 billion budget on Monday. The budget included raises for police officer and firefighters, although it was not as much as they were asking. Chris Ferrell, a captain with the Raleigh Fire Department is concerned that the pay for veteran firefighters won't be enough to keep people from leaving for other departments. Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin says that employees are at the heart of the approved budget. (abc11, CBS17)
  3. Around 3,000 Wake County residents were without power on Tuesday afternoon. The outage began around 2 p.m. amidst a dangerous Heat Advisory with heat index values up to 105 degrees. According to Duke Energy's website, the outage was caused by equipment going offline, and the estimated restoration time was originally 5:00pm but was pushed to 7:45 p.m. (WRAL)
  4. The State Employee's Credit Union was victim to an attempted robbery before noon on Tuesday. The bank on the corner of N. Salisbury Street and Jones Road was targeted, but the robber was arrested shortly after leaving with the money. Nobody was injured. (abc11, CBS17) Police also released photos from the June 6 robbery of Wells Fargo Bank, and are asking with anyone who has information to contact CrimeStoppers. (CBS17)
  5. The Peace Street Bridge was the cause of traffic back up on Tuesday Morning. A tractor-trailer got stuck under the bridge northwest of downtown, and part of the top of the trailer was peeled back. The interchange at Peace and West Streets was blocked through 9:00am. The bridge has 12-foot, 4-inch clearance, but many drivers fail to recognize the signs warning of the height and become trapped. (WRAL)
