Happy National Fried Rice Day,
Fried rice and Raleigh throws me back to my Freshman year at NC State. We had an RA named Eric who hosted a weekly fried rice social, and that's where I learned to make some amazing fried rice. (Though I've never gotten as good as Eric). I hope you all had a safe, fun weekend and we can all get going on a brand new exciting week. Check out the top news, events, and more below.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- Raleigh police responded to a report of a disturbance at the MH New Mart on Garner Road late Saturday night. When they arrived they found 51-year-old Javan Cannon suffering from serious injuries. Cannon died later as a result of his injuries. The incident was originally being looked at as an assault and was upgraded to a homicide. Anyone who may have information is asked to contact Raleigh CrimeStoppers. (CBS17, WRAL)
- A Raleigh-based organization, Emancipate NC, has created an online database to track interactions with law enforcement. In North Carolina when a grievance is filled against an officer, it is put into their personnel file, which is no longer public record. Dawn Blagrove, Emancipate NC's executive director says, "What that does is create a level of insulation for bad law enforcement actors." The organization believes that what we have been lacking is a platform for people to share their stories that will give a statewide picture of law enforcement misconduct. The database is intended to create transparency, not to punish officers. (CBS17)
- The weekend return of North Carolina beer festival, Brewgaloo drew large crowds downtown. The event was scaled down with about half as many breweries participating in comparison to 2019. The entire event was outdoors and event organizers tried to plan for extra spaces to remain open to allow for physical distancing. Official statistics have not been released, but an organizer reported at least 25,000 people in attendance for the event. (abc11)
- On Saturday afternoon, more than 150 demonstrators marched through downtown Raleigh to protest mandates for masks and COVID-19 vaccines. As they marched they chanted things like "No mandate! No masks!" and they held signs with phrases such as "#FreedomOverForce" and "#StoptheMandate." People in attendance expressed that they feel the government is taking away their right to choose. Dr. David Wohl, an infectious disease specialist at UNC, spoke against the protestors saying "it's about using the current tools we have to put an end to this pandemic." (WRAL)
