Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. A Raleigh community is reacting after it discovered racist graffiti painted in a south Raleigh neighborhood. The Renaissance Park community is outraged and calling for accountability when the culprits are caught. Matt Moore woke to find "[Expletive] Lives Don't Matter" written on his driveway, and he said, "It's very much an invasion. ... You literally have to want to be here." Moore believes he was targeted due to his yard signs that read "Black Lives Matter" and "Science is Real." (WRAL)
  2. Raleigh police have been working to make changes and connect with the community after two very tense years. Diana Powell, a community activist in Raleigh and executive director for Justice Serve NC said that communication has improved between RPD and residents and she looks forward to the department's new de-escalation policy. Powell is optimistic about the change, while other community leaders believe that more still needs to be done to improve relations. (abc11)
  3. Dozens of concertgoers are facing charges after the Alcohol Law Enforcement operation at the Phish concert. On July 29, special agents with ALE and the Wake County Sheriff's Office, RPD, NC Department of Corrections and NC Department of Revenue participated in the operation. DPS said that 25 people now face a total of 64 charges, 19 of which are felonies. Agents seized MDMA, methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms. (CBS17)
  4. Raleigh Fire Chief Herbert Griffin is working to reassure residents after a social media post has been making rounds that he said is "using scare tactics (and) fear mongering." Griffin said that public safety is not at risk, even though two fire trucks are out of service due to a staffing shortage. He emphasized that, when the community calls, you will have a response and know that a truck is coming. There are 68 firefighter openings and the city is taking steps to lure in new workers. (abc11)
  5. An armed man robbed the Han Dee Hugo's/BP by North Carolina State University on Thursday morning. The robbery took place before 4 a.m. and witnesses said the man was wearing a white hoodie and mask. The man showed an employee his handgun and fled north toward Faircloth Street and Clark Avenue. Police did not specify what was stolen and the store clerk was not injured. (CBS17, WRAL)
  6. Residents of the Hayes Barton Historic District are organizing against the city's latest changes to rezoning laws that will allow a private resident to sell their mansion to a developer. The developer has plans to construct 17 luxury townhomes on the property for around $2 million a piece. The rezoning changes took effect this week that were passed back in 2021 with the intention to "better accommodate existing and future residents." (WRAL)
