Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Earlier this week, North Carolina U.S. Senate candidates had no scheduled debates set, but now Ted Budd's campaign has reached an agreement with Cheri Beasley on a debate plan. The date is not set in stone yet, but it is expected to be sometime in October. The plans have emerged after Beasley's campaign said that Budd was "flat out refusing to debate." An email from Ted Budd's campaign said that they were happy to accept the invitation to participate in the debate with Spectrum News and has no objections to the Libertarian and Green Party nominees participation. (CBS17) The candidates have also begun touring the state ahead of the November 8 election. (Spectrum News 1)
  2. In spite of heavy rains this weekend, events in Raleigh were a huge hit. The Hopscotch Music Festival, N.C. State's first home football game and the Hops for Hope events all drew large crowds. Twenty-nine breweries participated in the Hops for Hope event and raised nearly $400,000 to help children in need of medical care. (CBS17) Businesses said that the Hopscotch Music Festival and N.C. Republicans want a judge to declare that the state board is violating state law and the state and U.S. constitutions. The board decided to move the absentee ballot deadline from November 11, Veterans Day, to November 14 using the absentee ballot deadline law. The lawsuit says doesn't give the board authority to push the deadline back based on a legal holiday. (WRAL)
  4. The city of Raleigh is in the final stages of purchasing land to develop future affordable housing. The city council just authorized the purchase and the city's housing department will soon look for a developer to build homes. Housing programs administrator Erika Brandt said that because the city will own the property, it will help keep the housing affordable for even longer. (CBS17)
  5. According to Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker, one person was shot in broad daylight near Wake Tech Community College on Sunday afternoon.
