Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Raleigh Rise Against Hunger hosted a volunteer event on Saturday that had 160-plus volunteers present. The volunteers packaged meals that will help feed families in other countries that include rice, soy, vegetables and vitamins. The goal of the day was to package more than 50,000 meals, as COVID has likely doubled the number of families in need. (abc11, CBS17)
  2. As hospitality and tourism numbers show a positive trend, Raleigh has been ranked one of the top summer travel destinations by WalletHub. In their 2022 Best Summer Travel Destinations report, WalletHub ranked Raleigh No. 13 out of the 20 selected among 100 areas considered. The data set used included cost of the cheapest flight, number of attractions, COVID-19 cases and more. (CBS17, FOX8)
  3. Firefighters were called to a home in Cary near the intersection of Green Level Church Road and Weycroft Avenue on Saturday afternoon. One person, a 12-year-old girl, was in the home at the time of the fire and escaped without injury. Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire officially. (abc11)
  4. The Raleigh Police Department's Traffic Flex Team was awarded the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Agency of the Year Award for 2021. Representatives were present at a banquet in Cary on Friday to accept the award, along with Chief of Police Estella Patterson. MADD president Alex Otte was also present at the ceremony, representing the organization that was created in 1980. (CBS17)
  5. The Got To Be NC Festival returned on Friday, and organizers estimate thousands were in attendance. The festival brought more than 120 vendors to the area to showcase their goods. Even with temperatures in the low 90s guests were excited to be there. The festival was created to celebrate North Carolina's agribusinesses that work to keep the country fed. (CBS17)
