Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- As the Raleigh Police Department re-assesses its de-escalation policy, the family of Ruel Rodrigues Nunez said there should have been more done to de-escalate the situation. Body camera footage was recently released from the incident involving Molotov cocktails that led to Nunez's death. His family said that the officers need to be held accountable as they failed to de-escalate the situation, and challenged Nunez. The family is also calling for the termination of officer PW Coats and for more investment into crisis response. (abc11)
- A new analysis from WalletHub ranks Raleigh as the 43rd best U.S. city in which to raise a family, although Raleigh is the fifth most affordable U.S. city for families and ranked high for summer employment opportunities and economic opportunity for teenagers and early career professionals. The study measured 46 different metrics and Raleigh lagged in educational environment, child care environment, and "family fun." (WRAL TechWire)
- Wye Hill Kitchen and Brewing has taken a controversial stance and landed in the center of controversy. The restaurant had booked a reservation for 30 people but canceled the event two days later. A spokesperson for the Wake County chapter of Moms for Liberty said that the event was a happy hour with no political affiliation. The Moms for Liberty group has organized and protested to the Wake County School Board regarding progressive teaching. Wye Hill has backed its decision and is hosting a children's book sale to benefit the LGBTQ+ community instead. (abc11)
- The Jeanes Fellows Program initiative was announced on Thursday in an effort to create a more diverse teacher workforce. The Dudley Flood Center for Educational Equity and Opportunity of Raleigh has been working toward this project for some time, with roots tracing back to 1907. The program has three foundational plans they hope will achieve "true inclusivity for N.C. kids," including the Leandro Action Plan, DRIVE Task Force Final Report and Recommendations, and the NC State Board of Education Statewide Strategic Plan. - The North Carolina History Museum has gotten a new addition to the military exhibit. The first ever "NC Military Hall of Firsts" has been added, highlighting people who have excelled in their military career and given back to their community in the state of North Carolina. People can nominate a veteran for induction, to be voted on by a committee put together by the NCDMVA. This year, eight veterans were inducted into the hall, three of whom are still living. (CBS17)
