Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Three months ago, the Raleigh Police Department launched the ACORNS unit. The unit stands for Addressing Crisis through Outreach, Referrals, Networking, and Service, and tries to connect individuals involved in interactions with law enforcement with community resources. Citizens are glad to have a crisis response team that employs social workers to deal with mental health instances, and ACORNS hopes to expand in the future. (abc11)
  2. Coyote sightings have been up in the area with most people unaffected, but one North Raleigh woman had a concerning encounter when her 15-year-old dog was attacked. Denise Morgan was able to scare off the offending coyotes, but not before they caused some serious injury. (WRAL)
  3. Some parents in Raleigh are pushing back against the Wake County Public School System reassignment plans. Although they are only on Draft 2, Abbott's Creek Elementary students are especially subject to transitions due to overcrowding. Another issue parents are raising is changing from year round to traditional schedule or vice-versa. Final approval is expected by December 7. (WRAL)
  4. A 41-year-old Raleigh man is facing charges after claiming to find hair in his McDonalds hamburger. The Department of Insurance said that he filed a claim for pain and suffering damages as well as $1,595.90 in medical expenses due to feeling "nauseous after eating the burger with the hair in it." Ronnie Bernard Truesdale is now being charged with insurance fraud and felony attempting to obtain property by false pretense. (CBS17)
  5. Wake County is accepting applications to be a part of the newly formed Affordable Housing Committee. The committee will have 16 seats and it will provide feedback and share resources around the Housing Affordability and Community Revitalization Department's future efforts. (SpectacularMag) The decision to form the committee comes as many in Wake County are still struggling to get rent and utility bill assistance. (WRAL)
  6. On Wednesday, Durham police announced that charges have been filed in the death of Jasmine Harbison, the Raleigh woman who died helping victims of another car wreck.(abc11)
