Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Raleigh City Council unanimously approved the city's first social district on Tuesday. Businesses along Fayetteville Street can now partake in the social district. The city council also expanded the original borders to include parts of the warehouse district, along with City Market and Red Hat Amphitheater. Serving alcohol in open containers within the boundaries will begin on August 15. (abc11, CBS17, Spectrum News 1, Spectrum News 1, WRAL) Durham is considering it's own social districts as well.   2. Other things discussed at Raleigh's City Council meeting include:
    1. Groups called for the implementation of a citywide plastic bag fee. (CBS17)
    2. The council declined to vote on the proposal for zoning near North Hills, stating there was more to the plan that still needed to be worked out. (CBS17)
    3. Beginning on August 1, some city buildings will have increased security. (CBS17)
  3. Two people were killed in a Raleigh apartment complex shooting on Tuesday night. The complex is located on Shanda Drive and officers arrived to find a 23-month-old toddler dead at the scene. Two adults were taken to the hospital where one died. The suspect, who was the toddler's father, was taken to the hospital, but is in custody and has been charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. (abc11, CBS17, FOX News WITN, WRAL) In an unrelated shooting at a Raleigh gas station on Tuesday afternoon, one man has died. (abc11)
  4. The Town of Cary has issued a Request for Proposals for three new food and beverage concepts for the second phase of development of the Downtown Cary Park. The town and other stakeholders invested $69 million into this downtown attraction and the park is set to open in the spring of 2023. The park will total seven acres in size and will offer green space, paved walking trails, performance places, market spaces, public art, food and beverage facilities, a play area, interactive water features, a dog playing field and walkways.   5. Wake County is reopening some of its cooling centers, as temperatures are expected to reach more than 100 degrees. (CBS17) Most of Central North Carolina went into a heat advisory on Wednesday, that will last through Friday. a level of 2 to 5 risk is in place for strong to severe storms. The storms have the potential to bring damaging winds, hail and street flooding. (abc11)
