Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Republican candidates Bo Hines and Renee Ellmers will be competing for what is expected to be North Carolina's closest congressional race this year in the 13th Congressional District. Both Candidates had formerly announced plans to run in a Greensboro area district, but after the new congressional map was enacted with a stronger Democratic leaning seat in that area, both decided to vie for the 13th District seat. (WRAL)
- Raleigh City Councilman Patrick Buffkin has announced that he will be running for the N.C. Senate. Buffkin served the city council since 2019, and he says that his time on the council, "made it clear that the most urgent challenges facing our community could use a fighter with city lawmaking experience at state level." (INDY Week)
- Raleigh leaders are considering the creation of social districts that will allow patrons to purchase alcohol from restaurants or bars in the district and carry it out. Raleigh leaders and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance are proceeding with caution, considering a "test run along Fayetteville Street. The hope is that social districts could help business owners, but the fear is social districts turning into intense party districts. (CBS17, WRAL)
- The Raleigh City Council approved a rezoning request on Tuesday that will allow developers to build structures up to 40 stories tall. The Nash Square high-rise is set for construction and will contain 2,425 residential units, 1.4 million square feet of office space and 70,000 square feet of retail space. The PNC plaza building is the current tallest in Raleigh at 33-stories tall. (abc11)
- A Raleigh native who is living in Poland is working to coordinate supplies for Ukrainian refugees. Poland is taking in a reported 50,000 refugees a day, and Lauren English says there is an urgent need for help. English and her husband are just a couple hours from the country's border with Ukraine and made a post asking for help to clothe those seeking refuge. Her post received nearly $5,000, that was used to help fund an ambulance and more. (WRAL) Another Raleigh family celebrated as they were able to reunite with family members who escaped Ukraine.
