Happy Merry Go Round Day,
I know you probably feel like every day you're hearing about COVID-19, and today there's some important news about venues requiring vaccinations. There is also some news that I am excited to celebrate with things reopening for the first time since the pandemic begun. So check out all that and so much more below.
Today's weather: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 90 Low: 74.
Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- With COVID-19 case numbers climbing more rapidly than we have seen in months, many healthcare providers are now requiring that their workers be vaccinated. The North Carolina Healthcare Association applauds the move by Duke and UNC, and expects more healthcare systems to follow. Many universities and businesses are also requiring vaccines for return to in person learning or dining. The Health Care Facilities Association doesn't expect the move to happen in nursing homes, despite the population being incredibly vulnerable, due to staffing constraints. (CBS17)
- Daniel Valencia-Rodriguez was arrested on Wednesday and is now behind bars on a $2 million bond for a relationship with a minor. The victim was 11 years old, and knew Valencia-Rodriguez. A family member reported the crimes to the police. Valencia-Rodriguez is facing charges of statutory rape of a child by an adult, statutory sex offense with a child by an adult, and indecent liberties with a child. (WNCT9)
- For the first time in 18 months, the Coastal Credit Union Music Park reopened to host Dave Matthews Band. The venue was sold out as nearly 20,000 people came out to enjoy the show. Although the venue does not require masks, they have taken precautions to keep crowds and staff safe such as going paperless and offering sanitizing stations throughout the venue. The concert was an emotional comeback for fans and employees, and marks the first of many more to come. (CBS17)
- Another venue is excited as it anticipates the date to reopen on the 27th of this month. The North Carolina Theatre will be presenting Songs For a New World at Raleigh Memorial Auditorium. The performance is about hope and dealing with sudden changes, which is a fitting return for local live theatre. The theater will also present digital filming online for the first time. (abc11)
- In an effort to get more people vaccinated, Wake County is now doing door-to-door vaccinations. In an effort to reach under vaccinated communities, Wake county is using pop-up clinics and knocking on doors to let families know they are there. In many studies, researchers have found that the best way to combat vaccine hesitancy is by taking the time to connect with people around their fears. The "strike teams" have been able to connect with people and talk to them about the barriers or hesitation in getting the vaccines, and set up second doses for them. (WNCT9)
