Happy International Youth Day,

Today we talk about the NC budget proposal, the incentive that's getting people vaccinated, and a suspect arrested in the recent murder of Charlie Cook Debnam. Read all about that, events, and more below.

First, today's weather: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 94 Low: 77.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The $100 incentive to get vaccinated has helped spark a surge in COVID-19 vaccinations. Health officials are hopeful that more people will choose to get vaccinated now that North Carolina is offering the increased incentive to everyone. More North Carolina residents got vaccinated last week than any week since the week of May 24. (13 News Now)
  2. With the NC budget proposal that House Republicans unveiled, many lawmakers are weighing in. Governor Cooper believes that the proposal is an improvement over the Senate version, however he added "that doesn't make it good." The House hopes to pass the budget today, but to do that they will need to bring it more in line with the Republican controlled Senate and Governor Cooper's respective visions. (CBS17) Democratic lawmakers are using a judge's order in the Leandro school funding litigation, in an attempt to raise education funding. (WITN)
  3. A suspect has been arrested in the murder of Charlie Cook Debnam, the drum major who was caught in a crossfire while volunteering. The suspect authorities have in custody was captured late last week north of Boston. Markus Walton was hiding out in a 5th floor apartment in Revere, Massachusetts and attempted to jump from the window of that apartment when authorities arrived. Officials were able to talk him down and he was taken into custody and is expected to be extradited to Wake County on the murder charge. (FOX8)
  4. Six schools in Wake County have been identified as having active clusters of COVID-19 cases. The schools include four elementary schools and two middle schools. (CBS17) As schools have been reopening, many national political voices have emphasized their support of vaccine mandates for educators. The North Carolina Association of Educators say they do not have a position on vaccine mandates at this point. (abc11)
  5. Businesses in North Carolina are set to benefit from the Federal infrastructure bill passed in the U.S. Senate. Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis both voted yes for the bipartisan legislation that would bring $9 billion in road funding and $440 million in clean water funds to North Carolina. It would also pay to bring broadband to more than a million North Carolina households without access to the internet, and Raleigh construction related businesses are excited about the potential for an influx of jobs.
