Happy Guinea Pig Appreciation Day,

Hello Raleigh friends, today I have news progress in law enforcement, a great opportunity to get what your kids might need, clean energy efforts, and so much more. I also rounded up some events featuring live music, henna tattoos, and some very grown up entertainment. Check it all out below.

Today's weather: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 92 Low: 76.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The North Carolina House Committee has cleared a measure that focuses on weeding out problem law enforcement officers and giving mental health aid to others. Critics are displeased with the alterations that removed the proposed changes to how certain body camera footage can be viewed by families. The original draft was unanimously approved in the Senate in May. (WITN)
  2. The Kids Exchange Consignment Sale at the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh is expected to draw crowds in the tens of thousands. The consignment sale features miles of clothing racks, tables with toys, books, games, and baby supplies. Starting at 9 am today, the general public can come and shop for free. (CBS17)
  3. North Carolina is taking a step towards a cleaner energy future. On Wednesday, the state House approved a measure that would retire inefficient coal-fired power plants. The move would phase out five locations by the end of 2030, contributing a 62% reduction in power-sector greenhouse gases compared to 2005. One of the most notable critics of the bill is Governor Roy Cooper, who believes that it doesn't do enough, and wants to see a 70% decrease. (abc12)
  4. Raleigh business owner, Kim Hammer, is fighting to protect her downtown business, Bittersweet. The federal Restaurant Revitalization Fund was intended to be a lifeline for many, however the execution has been questionable. Hammer applied for rescue funds and was approved, but due to a lawsuit challenging the U.S. Small Business Administration, the approval was revoked. (WRAL)
  5. North Carolina has experienced an almost 1,000 jump in new COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday. This is the highest leap since May, and with the Delta variant taking over, experts predict that it could become much worse. The jump can likely be contributed to the Fourth of July holiday weekend, but with the aggressive nature of the variant, and UK deaths doubling since the Delta variant took over, experts don't want anyone getting too comfortable.
