Happy National Bagelfest Day,

We're heading into Monday with a fresh week. Today I got together stories of hospital staffing shortages, a gunshot victim, and COVID-19 vaccine/testing news. I also have events and more for you to check out below.

Today's weather: Rain in the evening and overnight. High: 91 Low: 77.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Hospitals in the Triangle are searching for hundreds of nurses to fill vacancies. As COVID-19 cases surge, the shortage for nurses continues. Duke Health is looking for 700 additional nurses, and UNC needs more than 800. Due to staffing concerns, many patients have been deterred from going to the hospital. As a result of the shortages, nurses have been forced to take on additional cases, and are stretched thin for care. (CBS17)
  2. A man was taken to the hospital after a shooting on Saturday afternoon. The incident was reported around 2:50 pm on Perry Creek Road. The injuries did not appear to be life threatening. No other information was released regarding the shooting, and police ask anyone who may have more information to contact Raleigh CrimeStoppers. (CBS17)
  3. Wake County has seen an uptick in people seeking COVID-19 tests. One testing site, Vision Church, saw a steady flow of cars through its facility this last week. A nurse from that facility said lines began forming before they were even open. The county is also offering a COVID test home collection kit program. (CBS17)
  4. North Carolina leaders are urging people to get vaccinated before attending public universities, but they are not officially mandating it. Many private colleges have already announced that they will require vaccinations for the fall semester, forcing many students to get the shot who had not planned to get vaccinated. Republican Senate leader Phil Berger said they do not feel comfortable issuing the requirement as the vaccine is still authorized for emergency use. Governor Cooper has also not pushed for a vaccine mandate, but is strongly encouraging students get vaccinated. (WAVY)
  5. North Carolina commercial fisherman have had the opportunity to reflect on their 2020 year, and report 20% less fish and shellfish sales. The downturn in sales is being blamed on the stay-at-home order. Fisherman found it extremely difficult to move blue crab at the beginning of the stay-at-home order when many restaurants were closed.
