Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- Two of Raleigh's HBCUs are set to receive grant money to help preserve their historic structures. Shaw University and St. Augustine's University have been named as 2022 Grand Award Recipients alongside two other NC schools, among 21 recipients. Shaw University will use the money to rehabilitate Tyler Hall and St. Augustine's will use the grant to help repair its historic chapel. (CBS17)
- Raleigh police are investigating after the death of a man near the garage of a new construction home. The complex, 504 W. By Centex on Honey Ivy Lane is still under construction. The body was visible in a driveway along the stree, and the man was found with multiple gunshot wounds. More than a dozen police cars were present and construction was paused while they interviewed members of the construction crew. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
- A visiting family was stuck in Raleigh flash flood waters on Thursday. The cab driver did not anticipate the speed of water rising and said that he did not see it until it was too late. The taxi driver and family were able to escape the cab, but exited to find water that was around their waists. (CBS17, WRAL)
- There are currently contracts for 31 road construction projects in Wake County and five of the biggest are behind schedule. Supply and labor shortages are partially to blame as contractors statewide are struggling to find labor to get the jobs done. NCDOT says that contractors are shifting around resources to keep things moving, but as there are several major projects happening at the same time, timelines continue to be pushed back. (WRAL)
- Two Raleigh nonprofits are drawing attention to the uptick in fentanyl in the community. The team at Healing Transitions has been made aware of 554 overdoses in Wake County so far this year. On Wednesday, the Durham County Sheriff's Office intercepted one kilo of fentanyl pills. The number of people who tested positive for fentanyl when they died in North Carolina is up 30% from 2020, and has been steadily rising over the years. Freida MacDonald of Know Hope North Carolina says that raising awareness and stopping the stigma is key to getting the numbers down. (CBS17)
