Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The city of Raleigh will be launching a gun buyback program on Saturday, August 20. Mayor Mary Ann Baldwin shared the news on Monday after the event in Durham received nearly 300 firearms. Baldwin said that the city will be offering gift cards up to $200 in value for any weapons turned in by owners. More information will be released at a later date. (WRAL)
  2. The first N.C. Pet Expo was held this weekend, as a two-day event at the state fairgrounds. Organizers estimate around 5,000 people were in attendance and say it was a successful event, with plans to return in 2023. The expo had vendors, wildlife and a pet costume contest. Lisa Hobbs, general manager for Curtis Marketing Group and the N.C. Pet Expo said that the event was like the fair for dogs, as they often indulged in too many treats. (Spectrum News 1)
  3. Raleigh has been ranked the best city across the United States to launch an online business. The report from Business CenturyLink.com considered criteria ranging from taxes to quality of life, internet access, and business environment. The CenturyLink report noted that Raleigh was "…home to some of the fastest-growing companies and communities in the world." The number two spot was secured by Charlotte. (WRALTechWire)
  4. Shaw University is inviting the public to tour its campus on Monday as it continues to work on redevelopment plans. The university owns a sizeable amount of land in downtown Raleigh, and university leaders are outlining their vision for the Shaw U District plan that would include new residence halls, a student center and other facilities. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a tour of the campus. (WRAL)
  5. A road was closed outside of southeast Raleigh on Sunday afternoon following a head-on collision between two vehicles. The wreck was reported around 3:15 p.m. along Barwell Road at Shirley Street, when the driver of an SUV swerved in his lane before crossing the double yellow line and hitting a Honda sedan head on. The woman driving the Honda and the man driving the SUV were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said an investigation was underway into possible impairment.   6. Wake County commissioners heard a presentation on proposed renovations for Five County Stadium on Monday. The goal of the presentation is to bring the stadium in line with similar ballparks through a series of improvements and renovations by 2025. The current proposal calls for $15 million in upgrades.
