Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. WalletHub has released a new ranking that puts Raleigh and Durham in the top 15 best-run cities in America. Raleigh ranks number 13, just behind Durham at number 10. The report compared 150 of the largest U.S. cities based on operating efficiency, and constructed a "quality of city services" score for each city. It also took into account the city's total per-capita budget, in which Raleigh was ranked number 29. (CBS17)
  2. Tuesday, vaccinations for children as young as six months began at CVS and Walgreens. The federal government gave Pfizer and Moderna's COVID-19 shots final approval, and the first doses arrived in N.C. on Monday. Walgreens is offering the vaccine to children three and older. Wake County Public Health will begin taking appointments beginning today. Some parents are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to protect their children. (WRAL).
  3. A Raleigh veterinarian is warning pet owners after seeing a spike in kennel cough among dogs. Care First Oberlin Animal Hospital has seen 170 dogs with the serious cough. The disease can be fatal if not treated. As many owners board their pets over the July 4 holiday weekend, Dr. Wages advises owners make sure their pets are up to date on all of their shots at least two weeks prior to boarding. Owners should also be wary of locations that can spread kennel cough, such as dog parks, doggie day cares or other communal gatherings. (abc11)
  4. Residents should be wary as scammers attempt to capitalize on rising temperatures, by making people believe they are at risk of losing power. Scammers have been manipulating their caller ID and voice recording to appear as though Duke Energy is calling to discuss delinquent payment. Instead of responding to calls or texts, you should reach out to the utility company directly. Anyone who requires payment via prepaid debit cards, gift cards or app payment is a scam. (abc11) Duke Energy Fraud and Scam Tips are available here.
  5. A Wake County Powerball ticket matched four of the five white balls in Monday night's drawing. The ticket is worth $50,000, but the winner has yet to be identified. The ticket was purchased at the Snack Shop on STate Route 55. Currently, the Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots are worth more than $600 million and rising. (CBS17). This winning ticket is just days after one Raleigh father won $2 million off of a $20 scratch off. (CBS17)
