Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Patients seeking care for cancer, now have a local option to turn to. WakeMed Cancer Center - Hematology and Medical Oncology opened just a couple of weeks ago. Patients no longer have to go to another facility for long-term treatment. The hospital expansion now has the capability to provide chemotherapy, labs, pathology, bone marrow biopsies, imaging services and outpatient care. (CBS17)
- The State of North Carolina has announced an action plan to prevent suicides, as many are still struggling with the isolation brought on by the pandemic. Much of the program includes training in schools and other organizations to spot warning signs, as well as gun safety. Leaders with the National Alliance on Mental Illness Wake County chapter are excited state leaders are talking about the issue. Rosalie Tierno started a support group for suicide attempt survivors and has seen the group grow every week. (WRAL)
- The Wake County Board of Commissioners discussed the county's firearm ordinance on Monday, following complaints from Knightdale residents. The Commissioners and Sheriff's office said that they want more time to look into the ordinance and complaints from citizens before holding a vote to change the ordinance. Currently, there is no timeframe on when a vote may occur. (abc11)
- The Raleigh Trolley could benefit from a national Volkswagen settlement. In 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency discovered the company had illegally equipped some of its vehicles with software that allowed them to falsely pass emission tests. The company came to a settlement, with $435,153 designated to Raleigh's Transit and Shuttle Bus Program Project. The city plans to use the funds to replace the Raleigh Trolley with an all-new electric trolley. (CBS17)
- The North Carolina State Fair will be hosting a special beer night on the first full day of the fair, Friday, October 14. Representatives from Wake Tech's brewing education program and Raleigh's local homebrew club, CARBOY, will be present along with a panel of brewers. The celebration of craft breweries will take place from 5 - 8 p.m. at the NC Public House in the South Lobby of Dorton Arena. Passes for Kegs & Corks are on sale and valid for any night, not just NC Beer Night. (WRAL) As a whole, fair manager Kent Yelverton said that staffing may lead to longer lines, but it in in a much better place than last year. (CBS17)
