Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Memorial Day ceremonies took place across the Triangle. North Carolina is home to 14 military bases, including the most populated post in the U.S. at Fort Bragg. (abc11) 500 flags were placed on the Raleigh Baseball Complex field to honor veterans and first responders. The annual tradition dedicates each flag in memory or in honor of someone. The group held a commemorative ceremony on Monday morning. (CBS17)
  2. A Raleigh veteran took time to share the meaning behind Memorial Day, reflecting on his cousin who he lost in WWII. "I don't think too many people realize what Memorial Day is about, they think it's a holiday," said Edgar Helmey. He recalled flying during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and said that he never thought that he would live through it, but emphasized that "Memorial Day is not for me. Veterans Day is for me, Memorial Day is for those that's gone on." (Fox46)
  3. A Raleigh third grader, Harrison Johnson set a goal to raise $100,000 for the Pearl Harbor memorial fund. Yesterday, Johnson manned a booth selling ice cream at The Hasentree Club in North Raleigh, as they hosted a cookout from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in honor of the efforts. 4. Wake County third graders were honored for their part in making Wake County one of the most monarch-friendly places in the United States. Students in Katie Thompson's class at Pine Springs Preparatory Academy wrote to encourage the mayor to take part in the National Wildlife Federation's Mayor's Monarch Pledge, promising to help create habitats for pollinators. The students were honored for getting all Wake County cities and towns to sign the pledge. (WRAL)
  5. Three members of the UNC System Board of Governors voted against a plan by the General Assembly to move the system's offices to downtown Raleigh. The State budget law requires the system staff to move from Chapel Hill to Raleigh by the end of the year, costing $15 million over four years. Opponents of the plan say that it was tucked into the final budget bill without public discussion, and is $15 million that will be unavailable to meet the needs of people in North Carolina. (WUNC)
