Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- A large crowd of people gathered on the steps of the federal building and marched down the streets of Raleigh after the release of video footage in the death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis. The march in Raleigh was not just in response to Nichols' death, but also to call for accountability in the Raleigh Police Department in the death of Darryl Williams. Protestors called for the Raleigh City Council to put an end to "proactive policing." Emancipate NC Executive Director Dawn Blagrove spoke on behalf of many, stating, "we are exhausted from constantly having to demand and prove our own humanity." (abc11, abc11, CBS17, Spectrum News 1, WRAL)
- Raleigh Chief of Police Estella Patterson updated the City Council on Friday regarding the 2022 crime statistics. Patterson attributed some of the rise in crime to city growth and staffing shortages. She acknowledged the growth is here to stay and said they are working to fill vacancies while looking to partner with other departments. Patterson also addressed the death of Darryl Williams, saying that transparency is her top priority, and they will be petitioning courts to release body camera footage from the incident. The President of the Raleigh-Apex NAACP branch Gerald Givens highlighted some of his key takeaways, including a need for violence intervention programs and more funding to support them. (abc11, CBS17, CBS17, WRAL)
- Vice President Kamala Harris was scheduled to visit Raleigh on Thursday, but her trip was cancelled. Now the White House announced that she will instead be visiting the area on Monday, "to highlight the Biden-Harris Administration's investments in America's small business." On Thursday, Harris was scheduled to visit the area, but instead returned to Washington D.C. after mourning the death of recent mass shooting victims in California. (CBS17)
- North Carolina State University issued a Wolf Alert on Friday after a reported rape on campus. The incident took place at Bragaw Hall on Tuesday. Police do not believe that the suspect is affiliated with the university at this time. This event marks the fifth Wolf Alert since December regarding sexual assault on campus. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
- The Department of Justice convicted a Raleigh doctor of using 'unsanitary' surgical devices and other charges related to Medicare fraud. Anita Louise Jackson operated Greater Carolina Ear, Nose and Throat, but in her time there she prioritized profit and engaged in dangerous practices. During the investigation it came to light that Jackson misled and didn't inform patients that they were getting a procedure with a contaminated device that was approved for single-use only. Jackson also was convicted of making false statements relating to health care benefits, aggravated identity theft and mail fraud. (abc11, abc13)
