Happy National Taco Day,
I hope you all can excuse my absence yesterday, I was celebrating my son and husband's birthdays and did not have time to compile a newsletter for you all. There is a very good chance that next Sunday I may not be able to as well.
Today's weather, 10/4: A couple of afternoon showers. High: 84 Low: 66.
Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- Hundreds gathered in downtown Raleigh on Saturday for the Rally for Abortion Justice. The demonstration comes in response to SB8 in Texas that bans abortions after 6 weeks and allows anyone who aids in the process to be sued with cash rewards for informants. One 70-year-old attendee Joyce Baird expressed that this is a battle she's been fighting her whole life and hopes that she will not have to rally again in the future. Anti-abortion activists were also present and demonstrating at the event. (CBS17, Spectrum News 1)
- A Wake County family is begging for the return of a pickup truck that was stolen from the parking lot of Athens Drive Magnet High. More important than the truck itself, inside was a cross that contained the ashes of Corey Padgett who passed away on New Year's Eve after battling COVID-19. The family says "it feels like he [Padgett's brother] lost his brother all over again." The parents are offering a $500 reward for the ashes to be returned. (WRAL)
- Wake County Sheriff's Office conducted a DWI checkpoint on Saturday night that led to the arrests of 6 motorists. Wake County Public Information Officer Eric Curry said the sheriff's office conducted the checkpoint at the intersection of Hodge and Poole roads in Knightdale. The checkpoint found four motorists charged with driving while impaired, one who was charged and tried to flee from law enforcement, and one individual who was wanted by law enforcement. The sheriff's office also issued citations for 11 other types of violations. (CBS17)
- Around 10:30 pm on Friday night, Raleigh police responded to a shooting of two men off of Red Clay Drive near the Chelsea Apartments. (abc11) Another incident on Friday night, a box truck crashed into the front of a Raleigh home on Granite Street. (WRAL)
- Governor Cooper has ordered all US and NC flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff in honor of fallen firefighters. Today is recognized as National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day, and Public Law 107-51 mandates that from sunrise to sunset on October 4, flags are to be lowered in recognition of those lost in the line of duty. Individuals, schools, businesses, municipalities, and other organizations are encouraged to lower their flags for the holiday as well. (WECT) More info: National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.
