The moment I started thinking about Cuban sandwiches, I got a little distracted. So try to divert your attention long enough to dive in to all the news and more that I have gathered for you below. Read ahead to find out all about:

Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Families gathered in downtown Raleigh on Sunday morning, to shed light on the dangers of fentanyl. Patricia Dewes helped create Forgotten Victims of Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren Counties and has traveled across the country holding rallies to help raise awareness about fentanyl. Families who lost loved ones were out to share their stories and pressure the North Carolina District Attorneys to apply state laws to prosecute fentanyl involved homicides. (CBS17, WRAL)
  2. Two Wake County Schools were forced to dismiss early due to a power outage. The outage impacted more than 1,400 customers in Cary. According to Duke Power, a vehicle struck the equipment causing the outage. The schools sent an alert to parents and school buses provided transportation to those students who utilize the schools transportation. (CBS17)
  3. A single-vehicle crash on Monday morning closed the exit 14 westbound ramp of I-440 for more than three hours. The crash took place around 4:40 a.m. and involved a waste truck tanker that carries and empties porta-potties. One driver was involved in the wreck and was ejected from the truck that flipped multiple times. The driver sustained a broken leg from the crash. Cleanup efforts took some time to clear.   4. The Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity house at North Carolina State University reported an armed robbery on Sunday night. The robbery was off campus, outside of the fraternity house on Avent Ferry Road. The victim said two individuals pointed handguns at them and demanded they exit their vehicle. The suspects were unable to escape with the vehicle as they were unable to operate a manual transmission. They took the victim's cell phone and stole a different vehicle on Gorman Street.   5. The North Carolina Museum of History is preparing to unveil a new exhibit this fall. The "Power of Women in Country Music" exhibit is curated by the Grammy Museum. The exhibit will highlight female trailblazers in country music of the past, present and future. It will also be home to instruments, costumes and other artifacts from 70 different women in country music. The exhibit will open in October and run through February. (abc11)

  • It's National Cuban Sandwich Day, and I don't know about you, but I have been perpetually on a quest for the best Cuban in the area. I absolutely love Tropical Picken Chicken's cubanito, but I think today I'll have to head over to Casa Cubana and see if they take the cake.
  • Wake County has begun administering intradermal injections of the monkeypox vaccine in order to help supply more injections. (CBS17, WRAL)
  • The first spotted lanternfly has been seen in North Carolina. The spotted lanternfly is an invasive species and it could have a significant impact on North Carolina's environment. (The Technician)
  • The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club would like to extend an invitation to you for its Hospitality Career Carnival on August 30. Plan ahead to enjoy light food and learn more about positions starting at $17 an hour.
  • A student at N.C. State University created an all-day "Survivor" challenge for his birthday, and it's all recorded to enjoy. (The Technician)
