Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Although Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin had considered relaxing mask restrictions for gyms and small businesses, on Friday she said that in light of national trends and local case counts rising, the mandate will remain in place for the time being. Baldwin emphasized the importance of vaccinations and said they will continue to monitor the situation. (WRAL)
- Raleigh broke a nearly 100-year-old daily high temperature on Friday. Around this time of year, the temperature average is 54 degrees, with the previous hottest temperature on record at 72 degrees in 1924. Dr. Kenneth Kunkel at NCSU says that this represents something real happening to our climate and not just a random fluctuation. (CBS17)
- Approximately 5,000 people are expected to attend this weekend's Halo Championship Series at the Raleigh Convention Center. Those in attendance must submit proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 tests within 72 hours and complete daily health-checks prior to entering the convention center. (abc11)
- Two minors are in custody after a high speed car chase in a stolen Nissan Maxima. State troopers arrested the driver and passenger who face multiple charges after they crashed the car and fled. (WRAL)
- Wake County deputies were unable to locate Raequan Mudd during a manhunt in North Raleigh woods on Friday. Mudd is facing charges of shooting into an occupied dwelling and arson, and is considered armed and dangerous. (abc11)
