Happy World Humanitarian Day,
Today there is news about what Wake County can expect regarding the situation in Afghanistan, 8 Wake County nursing homes experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19, and two deaths being investigated in Raleigh. Check out all the news, events, and more below.
Today's weather, 8/19: Rain overnight. High: 92 Low: 75.
Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- As the US military continues to evacuate Americans and at-risk Afghans, relief organizations across the Triangle are preparing in anticipation of the arrival of families in need. The US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants is one organization that is anticipating a couple hundred emergency evacuees. The organizations are preparing to assist with housing, employment, and a wide range of other services. Traditionally relief organizations get a few weeks' notice, but with the events in Afghanistan they are only seeing one to two days notice. (CBS17)
- Many Triangle nursing homes are experiencing another wave of COVID-19 outbreaks. 140 facilities in the state have seen an outbreak of at least two cases, 8 of those are located in Wake County. In accordance with state rules, any time there is an outbreak, the nursing home is to be locked down with no visitors. During the lock down some loved ones are able to meet with family members through a baby monitor type system that can be challenging for less tech savvy residents. In the 140 nursing homes there are reported 1,170 COVID-19 cases, predominantly among staff members. (FOX8)
- When the school year began, Wake County was leaving it up to individual schools to come up with a plan of instruction for quarantined students. Students that were exposed to COVID-19 were sent home from 7-14 days with little work or guidance. On Tuesday the school district announced new uniform plans for instruction during quarantine. The changes include all teachers having a WCPSS landing page in Canvas or Google Classroom, regular live office hour times for students, district-level instructional support and live office hours, and if quarantine requires an entire classroom to quarantine, the class will become virtual when feasible. (CBS17)
- The 25-year-old victim of a stabbing on Tuesday afternoon died at the hospital. Police responded to the incident around 1:00 pm at Pines Court to find the victim, later identified as Raekwon Lamont Mitchell, suffering from stab wounds. Police have arrested Qualik Tyon Jones-Vinson and charged him with murder. Jones-Vinson is being detained at the Wake County Detention Center. (abc11)
- Raleigh Police are investigating the death of a 5-pound Yorkie that was hanged from a doorknob after being left in a Raleigh hotel. The dog's owner Sharis Castellano was visiting from Illinois for a cheerleading camp and college visits with her daughters. When the trio went out for shopping and dinner, they left their family pet without her leash and harness with food. When they returned, the dog was found with the leash wrapped several times around her neck dangling from the doorknob. The hotel manager is cooperating with the police department's investigation, and expresses her condolences. (CBS17)

Ok neighbors, I know there's a lot of heavy in the world today, so I can't emphasize enough, make some time for you. Do yoga, read a book, bake, or whatever else helps you find your calm. There's a lot to expect going forward in Raleigh. We all need to make sure we don't get swept up in all the chaos and forget to take care of ourselves. When we are able to take care of ourselves, we hopefully have spoons leftover to be humanitarians and take care of others to build a better community.
