Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- A gathering was held at the State Capitol on Thursday, in remembrance of the 198 people who lost their lives at work in 2020. Participants rang a bell once for each victim, while holding lists of names and pictures of the victims. North Carolina AFL-CIO President MaryBe McMillan said that COVID-19 accounted for a significant number of those among essential workers, whereas others died in workplace accidents. (WRAL)
- Neighbors called in a disturbance, as a 5-year-old was celebrating his birthday with friends, play fighting outside of their home. As police arrived, his grandmother Tosha Holder began recording, wary of the potential interaction. In response to the situation, the officers chatted with the kids and joined their playtime. Birthday boy, Eli describes it as the best birthday he's ever had, and the RPD is happy to be able to engage the community in a positive way. (abc7, abc11)
- An individual who was traveling on a moped, lost control of his vehicle and was hit by an oncoming SUV. The driver was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. Police blocked off Maybrook Drive to investigate the incident. No additional information is available at this time. (CBS17, WRAL)
- More than 100 people walked through Cary on the first night of early voting. One Wake organized the march to get people out to the polls and drum up support for the "Penny for Affordable Housing" Plan. The local housing fund currently in Cary's budget is funded in part by money from the American Rescue Plan Act, and advocates are working to ensure that whoever ends up in office is willing to support the effort even after ARPA funds run out. (abc11, Spectrum News 1)
- Families are still struggling to find an affordable place to live after the major apartment fire that displaced 26. The American Red Cross and the local fire department offers temporary assistance, providing support for the first 3-7 days, but with the current housing demand, many are in need. The Raleigh Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire off of Melvid Court. (CBS17)
