Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- State transportation officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel as the remainder of Hurricane Ian passes through the state. More than 2,200 N.C. Department of Transportation employees across the state have prepared equipment for possible clearing efforts, repairs, and pipe replacements. NCDOT's Chief Operating Officer, Joey Hopkins says to avoid roads with standing water and never drive around barricades. (abc11, WITN) I had to travel for work Friday and experienced hydroplaning on I-440. Be extremely cautious as the storm bands should continue into today. RDU had to cancel at least 70 flights due to the impacts of Hurricane Ian. (CBS17)
- Raleigh police are investigating after a man was found dead near Crabtree Creek Trail. Police responded to calls about a person on a greenway near the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Creedmoor Road. Upon arrival they found a man's body. The Crabtree Creek Trail was closed while officers investigated the incident. The victim was identified as 21-year-old Rodney Lewis Clark. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
- A study out of Raleigh's Meredith College has uncovered some "disturbing finds" surrounding American democracy. According to the poll released on Monday that surveyed 819 registered voters, 61% of Republicans and 36% of Democrats believe that the use of force may be necessary to save the country from what they see as a disappearing way of life. More than a third of the respondents said they believe there will be a civil war in the United States in the next few years. (WRAL)
- The Poe Center will be hosting an in-person program about healthy relationships, designed for 8th to 12th grade students. "Healthy Relationships 101" will be held on October 6 and will help young people explore setting and communicating personal boundaries, identifying warning signs of unhealthy relationships, and identifying societal influences that impact relationships. (WRAL)
- The Wake Tech Foundation has awarded its 2022-2023 academic year scholarships. The more than 300 student scholarships totaled $447,204, with the average recipient receiving more than $1,500. Of the recipients, 66% were Wake County residents, 35% were first generation college students, 17% were veterans of family of veterans, and 14% were single parents. (WakeTech.edu)

From my notebook:
- It's International Music Day and Raleigh is such a great city to celebrate in. Back when I started writing the Raleigh Patch Daily, I used to feature all the live music events in the area and honestly, it was just overwhelming (imagine the trivia times 10). That goes to say that Raleigh has so much music happening all the time! Check out Visit Raleigh's quick guide to Concerts & Live Music.
- Stay up to date on power outages in the area with Duke Energy's outage map.
- If you find any any baby gray squirrels displaced by the storms, reach out to a licensed rehabilitator to identify what to do and what not to do. (CBS17)
- If you see a downed power line, do not touch it. Assume that every downed power line is active and dangerous.(City of Raleigh Facebook)
More from our sponsors — thanks for supporting local news!

- Taxes in Retirement Seminar (October 4)
- Top 10 Divorce Mistakes & How to Avoid Them ~ Vesta's Charlotte, NC Hub (October 5)
