Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- Families who reside in the Buffaloe Road Mobile Home Community have been demanding answers as they were without water for three days. The property management company says that it has taken longer to get repair crews out as they are so backed up. The residents are speaking out, but keeping their identity concealed over fear of eviction. Property management blamed frozen pipes underground leading to residents homes. Residents say this is not the first time they have had to deal with water and septic issues. (WRAL) A A Knightdale resident is also expressing concerns, after living in a flooded apartment for days while awaiting someone to come repair the damages. According to the resident's brother, the flooding was caused by a water heater in the adjacent unit breaking, and after such delayed response, the damage has gotten far worse. (WRAL)
- Beginning on Sunday, January 1, new toll rates will take effect for the Triangle Expressway and Monroe Expressway. The annual increase is 2.43% more, making travel for a Class 1 or 2-axle vehicle for the full length of the Triangle Expressway $3.80. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority Board adopted schedules for incremental annual toll increases for both expressways based on the financing requirements for each project. The revenue is used to pay off bonds sold to fund the construction of the projects and overall road maintenance. (CBS17, Spectrum News 1)
- The City of Raleigh spent $5.7 million distributing 95-gallon yard waste collection carts back in July. Since the distribution of the carts, a city spokesperson says there have been zero injuries among employees handling yard waste carts. The carts have expedited collection for the 60 employees that service 124,000 homes, allowing them to maintain their routes more efficiently. (Spectrum News 1)
- The John Wall Holiday Invitational has drawn thousands to Raleigh. The event returns to Broughton High School for the first time since the pandemic. Raleigh native Jalan Ward who owns The Proud Black Brand was selected to create the official commemorative shirt for the tournament after winning the design contest. Over the years, the tournament has raised $1.5 million in scholarships for students. (CBS17)
- Authorities are reminding residents ahead of New Year's celebrations that celebratory gunfire can have dangerous consequences. Bullets that are fired into the air, can descend at speeds greater than 200 feet per second. There has been at least one victim to celebratory gunfire in the Triangle over the past three years. The Cary Police Department reminds residents that whoever fires a gun into the air is responsible for where the bullet lands. That could lead to vandalism or property damage charges if it hits a home or car. If the gunfire results in injury to a person or death, the charges are far more serious. There will also be additional patrols in place through the holidays to prevent dangers including drunk driving. (CBS17)
