Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- 11 local artists have been selected to create artwork for the Bus Rapid Transit Stations along New Bern Avenue. The selected artists are working with local historians and community members to gather inspiration to start concept designs that will be shared this Spring. (Patch)
- Multiple major accidents impacted travelers Friday. Around 8:00 am, a car was T-boned at the intersection of Louisburg and Perry Creek roads and landed on its drivers side. (CBS17) Another incident left one woman dead after a morning Hit-and-Run on Highway 401 northbound. (CBS17)
- The City of Raleigh has reduced the speed limit to 25 mph on 114 roads, with plans to adjust more speed limits in the near future. The change is part of an effort to improve safety after seeing an increase in deadly crashes this year with speed playing a factor in many of them. (CBS17)
- Nine Wake County parents have filed criminal complaints against the Wake County Public School System in response to LGBTQ+ literature. The parents claim that the books, "Lawn Boy," "Gender Queer," and "George" are "obscene, and sexually explicit." The books are not actively taught, but available in a number of school libraries in the county, and the district is reviewing the complaints against them. (abc11)
- The Wake County Sheriff's Office has issued 35,256 pistol purchase permits so far this year, and applications for concealed carry permits are at a 5-year high at 17,742. Sheriff Gerald Baker expressed that the biggest concern for law enforcement isn't the surge in sales, but the rising number of illegal gun possessions, and says legal gun owners must do their part to keep their weapons out of the hands of criminals.
