Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Raleigh has welcomed its first family from Afghanistan as of Saturday night. The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants and its community partners had only seven hours notice before their arrival. The family fled the Kabul airport on August 19 and described the chaos of crowds trying to get out. The family has one connection in Raleigh, a retired special ops soldier that the family's father had worked alongside in Afghanistan for years. He is already working to set up a stable job for his old friend. (CBS17)
  2. Raleigh police are investigating the shooting of two men found wounded early Sunday morning. Officers responded to a report of a shooting on Millbrook Road near Capitol Boulevard around 2:40 am. Police did not release the men's conditions or identities at this time. (USNews)
  3. A man has been sentenced in the armed robbery that occurred at the Royal Eco Marketing Company in December 2019. Dexter Jamal Williams pled guilty to the charges and will serve 14 years in prison. During the event, an employee was duct-taped to a chair and pistol whipped by Williams and two others. They made off with $20,000 in merchandise and while fleeing, an employee fired at the vehicle, wounding Williams. (abc13)
  4. Another North Carolina robbery case saw sentencing in Raleigh on Thursday. Glenn Alin Martinoff was located after authorities identified the get-away car as one that was on sale at a nearby dealership. Martinoff took the car for a test drive in order to use it as his escape. The Raleigh based U.S. Attorney's Office stated in a news release that Martinoff had pled guilty and received more than 4 years for the robbery. (WBTW)
  5. BrickUniverse returned to Raleigh this weekend for its seventh annual LEGO convention. Builders young and old got the opportunity to explore LEGO possibilities even though many of the interactive sites were removed due to COVID-19 precaution. Organizers created sessions for guests to explore the displays in socially-distanced ways. (CBS17)

Ok friends, that's all I have for this Monday. I would like to take a moment and apologize to you all. I have two very young children and often am writing these newsletters while juggling them. Sometimes I make small typos and a few have been brought to my attention this month. I'll do my best to be more thorough with punctuation and proof reading.

Anyways, I appreciate you all and will be back tomorrow with another round up. If you know anyone who would like to stay updated, send them this link to subscribe.
