Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The Raleigh Police Department is working to develop a new policy regarding de-escalation in tense situations. The initiative to focus on changing the use of force policies has been in the works for years, and the RPD was awarded a grant to begin making changes in 2021. Lieutenant Eric Goodwin is the project manager for policy development, and says, "...we wanted to expand simply from looking at de-escalation from the lens of use of force to looking at de-escalation through the lens of the value of sanctity of human life." (abc11, WRAL)
  2. One person was shot during an attempted robbery at the BP on Olympia Drive on Tuesday evening. The victim was a 44-year old man who sustained injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. Police believe the gunman targeted the victim who was a customer for robbery. Police said that the suspect watched and followed the man out, as he went in to try to purchase a phone charger and jumped the man near the gas pumps. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  3. Wake County will be increasing funding for a school-meal program, as the federal program is expiring at the end of June. The federal government has been providing free school lunch waivers through most of the pandemic, and Wake County is trying to ensure students won't be going without food. On Monday, Wake County approved additional funds for the Wake County School District with an extra $40,000 for the breakfast program. (abc11)
  4. NC State University students received an alert on Wednesday after shots were fired into a home near campus. The shooting occurred off campus, on Chappell Drive. Raleigh police notified the University police of the incident that happened around 12:15 a.m. The three suspected shooters fled the area on foot in the direction of Centennial Campus. (WRAL)
  5. Police took three individuals into custody after a robbery that led to a high-speed chase in Raleigh. The chase saw speeds in excess of 100mph and ended in a crash on Lake Boone Trail near Brooks Avenue before 11:45 p.m. Three of the four suspects were taken into custody and charged with two felony charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon. The fourth suspect is still missing. (WRAL)
  6. During Tuesday's city council meeting, abortion rights activists were in attendance and pushing the council to take steps to protect abortion access. Advocates called for a buffer zone around abortion clinics and noise ordinances, and Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin commented that those are possibilities. Baldwin also stated that there is no timeline currently for when that could happen. (CBS17, WRAL)
