Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- The Raleigh Police Department announced on Saturday, that it would be assigning officers to the newly created Parks and Greenways Patrol Unit. The department held a special news conference at Shelly Lake to make the announcement. Chief Estella Patterson says that it is important for neighbors and families to feel safe and secure while visiting. The unit's presence should deter and prevent crime, and the personnel will also interact with the public and build relationships throughout the community. (CBS17)
- The price of rentals in Raleigh is severely impacting many, but two groups in particular are struggling to find a place to live amidst the pricing increase. North Carolina State has seen an increase in students who are on the waitlist for university housing. More students are fighting to live on campus as rental costs in the area are staying high. (CBS17) People who have Housing Choice vouchers, also known as Section 8, are struggling to find affordable homes. Many are losing their opportunity to utilize their vouchers, as the average rent for a two bedroom apartment is priced $400 more than the vouchers. (abc11)
- The second annual Capital City Juneteenth Celebration took place as planed on Saturday, in spite of the cancellation of the Oberlin Village Heritage 5K. Organizers said that the attendance was at least double last year's, with more than 2,600 people celebrating. The festival had food trucks, live music, a children's area and more. The chapel was also filled with educational materials on the importance of the day. (WRAL)
- On Saturday night, one person was injured in a shooting on East Martin Street. Police said that one man was shot and taken to the hospital with what appeared to be serious injuries. Police have not released information about the victim or suspects. (WRAL)
- North Carolina lawmakers are still in session and here is a recap of some of the major things they have discussed and topics surrounding the General Assembly.
- North Carolina budget-writers are coming to a close on proposed adjustments to the second year of the state's two-year spending plan that was approved last fall. (Spectrum News 1)
- Lawmakers are considering two bills to legalize online sports gambling in the state. Senators anticipate that sports betting could be placed as early as sometime this fall. (WRAL)
- A group of Republican state lawmakers have introduced House Bill 1049 that will crack down on "free" electric vehicle charging stations. Providers who offer free electric charging stations would be required to disclose how much the service costs customers, and would ban free charging on state properties that do not offer free gasoline and diesel as well. (KPVI)
- Lawmakers are taking a step back on the Parent's Bill of Rights, and tabling it for now, as they don't see a path to it becoming a law at this time. (WRAL)
- A new ad campaign launched to apply pressure to House Republicans, after the Senate passed a Medicaid expansion coverage in North Carolina. (CBS17)
- A poll reveals that most North Carolinians want lawmakers to pass stricter gun laws and fear they or a family member may become victim of a mass shooting. (WRAL)
